Crate engines are sold in several stages of completion. Picking the right one comes down to what you are reusing and how much time you want to spend on assembly.
Bare block
A machined block only. Right for builders assembling a custom rotating assembly.
Short block
Block, crankshaft, rods and pistons. You supply heads, camshaft, valvetrain and everything on top. Popular when your heads are in good condition or you are building for a specific power level.
Long block or base engine
Adds cylinder heads, camshaft and valvetrain. You transfer the intake, fuel system, ignition and accessories from your old engine.
Mid-dressed and complete engines
Mid-dressed engines add an intake and some ancillaries; complete or deluxe-dressed engines arrive with intake, carburettor or EFI, distributor and often pulleys, so they are the closest to drop-in.
Engine and transmission packages
A matched engine and transmission in one shipment. Useful for restomods and swaps where the original transmission will not survive the extra power.
