TH400, 700R4, Powerglide or 4L60E: choosing a performance automatic

The right transmission depends on how the car will be driven, how much power it makes and what fits under it.

Powerglide

A two-speed automatic that is light, simple and strong. A favourite for drag racing, less suited to highway driving.

TH400

A three-speed automatic known for strength. Common behind big power and in heavier vehicles, with no overdrive for highway cruising.

700R4

A four-speed with overdrive, popular for street cars and restomods that need relaxed highway RPM. It needs a correctly set TV cable to live.

4L60E

The electronically controlled successor to the 700R4, found behind many LS swaps. It needs a compatible controller or ECU.

What to check

  • Bellhousing pattern and flexplate
  • Torque converter stall speed for your cam and gearing
  • Output shaft and transmission length for your driveshaft
  • Shifter and cooler connections
